Blog 3- Design and Coaching
The framework I am working with is TPACK. TPACK has the ability to increase teachers' ability to leverage technology for learning. When a teacher has training with TPAck and time to practice the implementation it has a positive effect on teacher performance (Singerin, 2022). When building professional learning courses for other teachers in my district right now there is a focus on how to use Canvas. As teachers begin to learn how to implement Canvas in their classes it would be a great time to refresh their learning on TPACK. While the district doesn’t have an explicit technology model at this time, in the past we have spent time learning about TPACK. In a Module format it would be easy to add a learning page about TPACK for teachers to reference and look over as we begin the process. I will be working with our instructional coaches to create small learning modules with video on how to set up and use some of the different features of Canvas within the technology the district has available, such as how to create a google doc assignment that makes a force copy of a template for students verses a live working google doc for editing. Because of the nature of what will go into the modules there will need to be a reintroduction to TPACK.
Once the modules have been created the instructional coaches and myself will be available at different times during the day and on certain PD days to help teachers that need more guidance. We will also be available via email. This interaction fits well with all of the ISTE coaching standards. I am the agent and learner as I teach myself about Canvas and how to use it best in my classroom. I am the collaborator, designer and facilitator when creating the modules for other teachers to view and use and during any coaching that happens. I do not have the experience or training to engage fully in cognitive coaching but can help in the consulting and collaboration areas of the coaching model (Costa, A. L., & Garmston, R. J.,2015). As I continue to work on helping teachers use Canvas, I hope to help them create better lessons and look at the why not just the how to use the technology. Melding the coaching aspect with integration of the TPACK framework will happen more in the one on one or small group setting. As I work with teacher it will be easier for me to keep the ISTE standards in mind than to add another thing for other teachers to try and implement in the use of technology. I can steer them toward the student and educator standards in a way that they are implementing them without having to overtly think about designing the lessons. The same can be said when using TPACK. The great thing about TPACK and other frameworks is the more you use it the easier it becomes.
I have already addressed some of the ISTE standards for coaching earlier, as I talked about creating coaching opportunities with fellow teachers. Most of the essential conditions are present in the district already. There are a couple that will need more support such as support policies and assessment and feedback as it relates to Canvas. My district has however shown in the past they are willing to do what is necessary to implement technology for the betterment of students.

Fitzpatrick,
ReplyDeleteThanks for explaining the progress of the educator or teacher into a coach. I am not an educator, but I use technology to put information about my patients so the biller, the insurance, the administrative, or other health care providers can see the progress of the patient while under my oversight. At times, I get stuck on the menus or options of electronic records and when I call the IT department I find some very helpful people at times and sometimes not.
I had the experience of having assigned a specific IT lady at one of the hospitals due to other IT staff having hard time understanding my English or my queries.
After learning about the cognitive coaching way to help students to direct their own learning, I started to think that my IT lady uses cognitive coaching to help learn to solve my technology problems. She had coached me to navigate the system, complete my charting, and enter my orders.
I don't go that often to that hospital and seems to me that every time I go back there, I have a new problem that need to be solved. I just feel comfortable asking for her help because she takes the time, has patience and is soft spoken.
Hello Fitzpatrick, your text is easy to read. Thank you for sharing it. I agree with you the practice of using technology by the TPACK training has positive effect on teacher performance. The more you use the easier it becomes. Nothing can not be more true. Practice always makes the practionner better. The challenge for me is to always maintaining the standards. Not just circling in the routine. Coaching opportunities you talk about are one of the answer to adress the challenge of the standards.
ReplyDeleteI'm in complete agreement with you on TPACK framework and feel that it is the one I may be using the most. Having become accustomed to a modular information delivery system over the past year I agree it makes things easier to just add to the module when more information or context is required. Canvas seems to be fairly user friendly on both the educator and learner sides of coursework and am glad you assist in helping others create better lessons with it.
